The Markit Environmental Registry is an authorized VCS registry to issue, transfer, retire, inquire and report Voluntary Carbon Units (VCUs).
With a financial markets history and background the Markit Registry (on-line, real-time) opened in April 2008. Bringing unprecedented robustness and rigour to carbon markets the Markit VCS Registry provides registry participants access to the financial sector with interoperability to exchanges and other registries using financial market standards (SWIFT), and in some cases the United Nations (UNFCCC) protocols.
Markit VCS Registry participants manage their VCUs from project initiation, validation, verification (by authorised VCS DOE), issuance (unique identifying serial number allocated), transferring ownership, to retiring on the Registry.
The Markit VCS Registry provides participants with the ability to settle transactions through the Markit Environmental Registry Central Securities Depository. This allows buyers and sellers to simultaneously settle funds and change of ownership of VCUs. (Delivery versus Payment).
Streamline the management of your portfolio of carbon credits with the Markit Environmental Registry meta-registry facility. As the Markit Environmental Registry was designed to be able to list multiple types of credits all Markit VCS Registry participants can not only view and manage VCUs, but also their entire carbon asset portfolio (and other environmental market commodities - for example Biodiversity Conservation Certificates, BCCs), from a single place - the Markit Environmental Registry.
Many Markit Environmental Registry customers are required to manage carbon credit holdings on behalf of other companies. The Markit VCS Registry allows the creation of unlimited sub-accounts. These sub-account customers can also have access to the Markit VCS Registry with their own secure user access name and password. Master accounts are permitted to manage single or many sub-accounts, including a single view of all holdings across all accounts.
