| TZ1 Registry Lists Climate, Community & Biodiversity (CCB) Standards Validation on Certified Credits | | Nov 12 2008 | |
12 November 2008
Washington DC, USA,
Environmental markets infrastructure provider TZ1 Registry announced today that it will communicate Climate, Community & Biodiversity validations via a tag on certified carbon credits.
The Climate, Community & Biodiversity Alliance (CCBA) is a partnership between leading companies, NGOs and research institutes seeking to promote integrated solutions for social and environmental benefits from land management around the world. With this goal in mind, the CCBA has developed voluntary standards to help design and identify land management projects that simultaneously mitigate climate change, support local communities and conserve biodiversity.
The Climate, Community & Biodiversity (CCB) Standards have become the most widely used and respected international standards for assessing the social and environmental benefits uniquely associated with land-based carbon projects. Some 100 projects around the world are using the CCB Standards. Of these, approximately 40% are in Latin America, 35% in Africa, 20% in Asia and a few projects each in Europe, Australasia and North America. Around 43% of these projects will involve reduced emissions from deforestation or forest degradation (REDD), 30% will include reforestation, 30% will include native forest restoration, 16% will include agroforestry, 14% will include sustainable forest management and 3% afforestation. Many projects are combining several of these project activities to help optimize their multiple benefits.
The CCB Standards join a rapidly expanding portfolio of standards listed on the TZ1 Registry including Voluntary Carbon Standard credits (VCUs), Biodiversity Conservation Certificates (BCCs) and the more recently announced partnership with Social Carbon. Projects validated against the CCB Standards will be able to communicate their multiple-benefit quality through a CCB tag associated with each carbon credit (e.g., VCU) listed on the TZ1 Registry.
"The TZ1 Registry supports the goals of CCBA to promote forest carbon activities that deliver credible and significant climate, community and biodiversity benefits", says Joanna Durbin, Director, Climate, Community and Biodiversity Alliance. "Customers can now easily see which carbon credits also create social and environmental benefits through an independent, secure, financial markets based registry.".
"Quality validation of carbon credits by the Climate, Community & Biodiversity Alliance is critical to build confidence in the voluntary carbon market," said Helen Robinson, Chief Executive, TZ1 Registry. "The TZ1 Registry is delighted to assist CCB Standards users in the provision of unique credit identification and authentication."
The TZ1 CCBA Registry will list CCB validated carbon credits which will be available on-line for viewing on www.tz1market.com.

About the Climate, Community & Biodiversity Alliance
The Climate, Community & Biodiversity Alliance (CCBA) is a global partnership of leading NGOs and private sector corporations including Conservation International, CARE International, Rainforest Alliance, The Nature Conservancy, Wildlife Conservation Society, BP, GFA Envest, Intel, SC Johnson, Sustainable Forestry Management Ltd., Weyerhaeuser, and advising institutions. The CCBA was created in 2003 to leverage policies and markets to promote the development of forest protection, restoration and agroforestry projects that deliver significant benefits for the global climate, local communities and biodiversity. The Climate, Community & Biodiversity (CCB) Standards were created by the CCBA and first released in May 2005 to foster the development and marketing of high quality multiple-benefit land-based carbon projects. Projects that meet the Standards adopt best practices to deliver robust and credible greenhouse gas reductions while also delivering net positive benefits to local communities and biodiversity.
